About Majac Steel & Processing

Overview

In the spring of 1995, Dave Hegan, a steel salesman for Feralloy Corporation, was presented with an issue by a customer.  He needed someone to shear to tight tolerance approximately 10 truckloads of steel per month.  Dave went looking for a business that could shear these loads but couldn’t find the right source.  So Dave shared the idea with a friend, Carl Horst.  Carl quit his job at Inland Steel and Majac Steel was born.

The ability to handle large volumes of shearing helped Majac grow over the years.  A conservative estimate is Majac has sheared over 500,000 tons of steel since opening in 1995.

Dave left Feralloy in 1996 and Carl sold him the small company.  As the 30th year anniversary approaches, it’s a conservative estimate that the combination of steel processed for others and sold through Majac is nearing 50,000 truckloads or 1,000,000 tons.

Majac Today

Today, shearing is not the primary focus of the operation. The focus has shifted to burning and selling as/is steel.  With the addition of two plasma tables and a large bed fiber laser, Majac Steel has built a niche in the elevator counterweight market. We have also been able to build a customer base burning trailer webs, cross-members, gussets, and a host of other products.  The 80 inch by 160 inch bed on our laser allows us the ability to perform jobs that others cannot.

In addition to processing, Majac also sells steel as is. We sell prime, excess prime, and prime remnants.  The remnants are sold at a big discount to prime and help our customers lower their internal costs.  Additionally the remnants are the source of most elevator counterweights we burn.  In 2024 we sold or consumed over 4,000,000 lbs. of remnants.
